Some files you will want to keep on your hard drive – like music, videos, or those presentations you worked so hard on. Other files you want to get rid of – like junk files or duplicates that needlessly take up space on your hard drive. The SoftByte Labs-developed application CloneMaster can help you with the later part.

The CloneMaster application has been created with a simple goal in mind: to identify duplicate files on your system. The application will scan your system, identify duplicates that do nothing more than waste disk space, then will remove said duplicates from your system.

You do not have to worry that CloneMaster will erroneously identify a file as a duplicate and remove it. The application searches only for try duplicates, files that are identical byte for byte. Thus CloneMaster will identify identical files even if their filename for example is different.

CloneMaster can identify duplicate files on just about any storage device, from your hard drive, to portable USB storage devices, to the CD/DVD drive, or network drives.

All the duplicate files that CloneMaster identifies are presented in an easy to understand list. From that list you can delete the duplicate files you want.

Before you go get CloneMaster and put it to the test, there are some technical details you should know about. The following technical details:
Download – the download weighs in at some 1.5MB, which is good news. It means that even on a less than spectacular internet connection, it will only take a moment to get CloneMaster off the web and onto your computer.
Installation – at the time of writing this and according to the developer, CloneMaster provides support for the old but popular Windows XP, the much avoided Windows Vista, and the latest and greatest, Windows 7.
Limitations – the Mass Delete function is disabled in the trial version
